The author based the Thomas books on adventures he relayed to entertain his son, Christopher, during his recovery from measles. He wrote many of the stories from the first four series based on personal life experiences.
The first episode of the show, based on “The Sad Story of Henry”, was a live broadcast on the evening of Sunday 14 June 1953. A track switch point failure caused the model of Henry* to derail. Viewers watched a human hand, reported to be of a crew member, pick him up and place him back on the rails. Models moved jerkily, and all effects and music had to be superimposed.

The BBC offered to give the Railway Series publishers greater creative control over the production of the episode following the shaky first start, but the publishers declined the offer, preferring to focus on publishing new books for the series.* Twenty years later, the BBC incorporated Awdry’s stories once again.

In 1984 the series was originally shot and produced with live action models as a fun method of animating the stories. Locomotives and other vehicles were operated by radio control, and static figures were used for humans and animals. A stop-motion technique was used sometimes when a human or animal character would move.
