Most hobby drones include multiple features that make them easy to fly. For example, a drone that has a Return to Home feature will automatically fly back to your location when you trigger the command. Another command may allow the drone to hover in place automatically, simplifying shooting photos and videos. Some drones will return to base immediately upon reaching a certain battery level, or a certain distance from the remote control. This means you don’t have to control the return flight.
Operating a quadcopter or aerial drone can sometimes be tricky. So to avoid any silly missteps, it’s essential to read the product’s manual and pay close attention to preflight preparations. After you understand your drone’s capabilities and limitations choose a safe test flight zone and practice some basic maneuvers before you take the leash off. **
Some hobby quadcopters and aerial drones make use of a dedicated hardware remote controller. Others require you to use an app on your smartphone to control the drone. Some drones have separate screens that allow you to watch where you’re flying through the camera, similar to a first-person pilot view. You may also be able to track the flight path through the smartphone screen and the remote control app.
Quadcopters differ from conventional helicopters by eliminating the need to vary the pitch of the blades dynamically as they move around the rotor hub. In the early days of flight, quadcopters (then referred to either as ‘quadrotors’ or simply as ‘helicopters’) were seen as possible solutions to some of the persistent problems in vertical flight. Torque-induced control issues and inefficiency issues due to using a tail rotor (which generates no useful lift) can be eliminated by a quadcopter’s counter-rotation. Also, the relatively short blades are much easier to construct. A number of manned designs started to appear in the 1920s and 1930s.
