When Randle Patrick McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) gets transferred for analysis from a jail farm to a mental establishment, he assumes it is going to be a less restrictive atmosphere. However the martinet Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher) runs the psychiatric ward with an iron fist, keeping her patients cowed via abuse, medicine and sessions of electroconvulsive remedy. The battle of wills between the rebellious McMurphy and the inflexible Ratched soon affects the entire ward’s patients.
